I didn't realise that if I gave a certain Subject for a post, if it was the
same as an earlier one, it would append itself to that one and not show as
the latest? Is this normal?

Yes and no... It depends on the software you use.
This (funny?) fact makes some users post, and repost, and re-re-post
the same message. Some users will see them as new items, some will see
them only as a reply to a former post with the same subject.
Messages with a subject like "quizz" or "test" are well known for that
:)
